Receipt Hog Review – Can You Really Make Money Scanning Receipts?

January 16, 2021

From digging up coupon codes to using popular reward apps, there are so many ways to save money when shopping at virtually any store!

And, out of all reward programs, receipt scanning apps are some of the most popular.

In a nutshell, these apps offer rebates and reward you with cashback for buying sponsored offers and uploading your receipt for proof of purchase.

Grocery reward apps like Checkout 51 and Fetch Rewards dominate this space. However, if you want to earn money from other receipts, these apps wont help you.

That’s why Receipt Hog, one of the largest receipt scanning apps that lets you earn rewards from almost any receipt, has grown in popularity.

Stick around until the end of this Receipt Hog review to find out the true earning potential of this app and if it’s even worth the download.

And, if you’re looking for even more lucrative options for making money with your smartphone, consider:

  • Mistplay – Earn free gift cards for playing your favorite and new Android mobile games. Read our Mistplay review for more info!
  • Drop – One of my favorite reward apps that pays you for shopping online at dozens of stores.

Let’s get to it!

What is Receipt Hog?

Receipt Hog is a free mobile app available for Android and IOS that lets you to scan receipts after shopping to earn rewards in the form of gift cards and cash.

The idea is pretty self explanatory, especially if you’ve used apps like Ibotta and Fetch Rewards before.

Receipt-hog-app

The Receipt Hog app has impressive ratings with 4.7 stars on the App Store and over 100k reviews on both IOS and Android.

Again, the main benefit of Receipt Hog (aside from making some extra money) is that you can scan receipts from almost any type of store.

Most other scanning apps are designed for specific types of stores such as grocery stores or department stores.

This difference is what makes Receipt Hog fairly unique, and getting started is also quite simple:

How Does Receipt Hog Work?

If you want to make money with Receipt Hog, this is how you get started:

  1. Download the free app on your mobile device.
  2. Create an account with your email address or Facebook.
  3. Shop and keep your receipts! This step is critical for using the app.
  4. Take a photo of your receipt by using Receipt Hog’s in-app scanner.
  5. Earn rewards for valid receipts (most receipts are valid, but more on this later).

The rewards are given to you in the form of coins (which we’ll discuss later). The amount of coins you earn is based on the amount of money spent on the receipt.

Receipt Hog is similar to apps like Fetch Rewards, and the key is to always save your shopping receipts and scan them if you want to get paid!

What Receipts Are Valid?

Receipt Hog works with a variety of stores we’re about to cover.

However, all valid receipts must contain the following 4 pieces of information:

  • Store name.
  • List of items purchased with their individual price.
  • Transaction total.
  • Transaction date.

As long as you have these things clearly shown in the picture of the receipt, you’re good to go!

Different Ways to Earn

There are plenty of ways to earn Receipt Hog rewards depending on what stores you shop at as well as completing other small tasks.

The first and most common way to earn is by scanning coin receipts…

1. Coin Receipts

Coin receipts are receipts from “fast shopping” stores that are usually everyday places you find yourself going to.

Examples of coin receipt stores include:

  • Grocery / Supermarkets.
  • Supercenters.
  • Club stores.
  • Health stores.
  • Bargain (Dollar Stores).
  • Drug & Pharmacy.
  • Liquor.
  • Convenience stores.
  • Beauty.
  • Pet stores.
  • Toy stores.
  • Mom-and-Pops, bodegas, and newsagents.

In other words, you’ll find that 90% or more of your shopping and receipt scanning will be done at these places.

This is a massive distinction from most receipt scanning apps that only work at grocery stores, pharmacies, and supercenters.

2. Spin Receipts

Although it doesn’t follow the traditional rewards, spin receipts are receipts that you can scan to unlock 1 spin of Hog Slots.

Hog Slots is a simple slot game. If you get lucky, you have the chance to win a hefty amount of bonus coins.

Plus, every day, 1 person wins their last shopping trip’s transaction total in coins, which could amount to hundreds of dollars!

Hog-Slots

These are examples of spin receipts categories:

  • Apparel.
  • Auto Part Retailers.
  • Department.
  • Discount.
  • Home Improvement.
  • Home Furnishings.
  • Office Supply.
  • Electronics.
  • Arts & Crafts.
  • Sports & Outdoors.

Since these retailers are less common to be shopped at, you’ll really only experience a spin receipt on the occasional biweekly basis (if that).

I will say, it does add an exciting element to earning a big reward from spinning a wheel and seeing what you get at random!

3. Sweepstake Receipts

Every single time you scan a receipt, you get an entry into a giant monthly sweepstakes!

Plus, the best part is, the winner doesn’t take everything.

You can earn anywhere from 20 coins to 5,000 coins depending on well you placed in the sweepstakes.

receipt-hog-scanner

I uploaded a receipt from a Walmart grocery trip – as you can see, I earned coins and one sweepstake entry.

On top of that, coin receipts and spin receipts are not the only ones that give you an entry. You can scan receipts from gas stations, bars, restaurants, delis, and cafes too!

There is no limit to how many you can scan in a month so have at it!

4. Surveys

On top of just scanning receipts, there are a few ways to earn bonus coins by completing small tasks.

One of those tasks includes taking short surveys for coins.

Online surveys aren’t worth it most of the time, but Receipt Hog surveys are pretty quick and painless.

The surveys will pop up on your app and will reward you a certain amount of coins depending on the length/importance of the survey.

You should note, surveys may not come in consistently so don’t rely on them to help you reach a certain goal.

They are mostly there for small bumps along the way.

Surveys do expire though, so get them done while you can for some extra coins.

Plus, you may not qualify for certain surveys even if they show up on your app, but you’ll still get rewarded with a few coins.

5. Weekly Progress

If you scan at least 1 receipt every week, you’ll earn 1 XP which helps you level up.

Why do you need to level up?

Well, leveling up helps you earn bigger rewards when you complete bonuses.

Bonuses are little tasks you can complete to earn you more spins on the Receipt Hog wheel. The bonuses only get better the more consistent you are with uploading your receipts.

Additionally, when you earn 100 coins in a week, every extra receipt you upload earns you an extra 5 coins per receipt.

This may seem like a lot of information, but it will make way more sense once you use these features in the app.

6. Email and Amazon Connect

You can connect your email account with Receipt Hog and they will find e-receipts from popular brands such as Amazon and Walmart to help you earn even more rewards.

Receipt Hog is very serious about their security and only offers this option if you’re comfortable giving them access to your emails.

Note: make sure you connect the email where your shopping receipts are sent to make sure Receipt Hog can track them.

If you want to get more serious about earning money from your online receipts, I suggest checking out:

  • Capital One Shopping – Automatically apply coupon codes at checkout and earn credits for shopping from specific retailers, which are redeemable for free gift cards. Note, Capital One Shopping compensates us for using the provided link to sign up.
  • Honey – Honey applies coupon codes and lets you redeem Honey Gold for dozens of gift card rewards. Check out our Honey extension review for all the details!

Receipt Hog Rewards – Receipt Hog Coin Value

Once you’ve scan a receipt, Receipt Hog notifies you when your receipt is verified and that you’ve earned coins.

As mentioned, the amount of coins you receive depends on the amount of money you spent at a particular store.

Here is a basic chart to explain the numbers:

  • <$10 = 5 coins.
  • $10-$50 = 10 coins.
  • $50-$100 = 15 coins.
  • $100+ = 20 coins.

To redeem your Receipt Hog rewards, you need at least 1,000 coins to cash out.

You have the option to redeem through Amazon gift cards or Paypal transfer to your bank.

reward-options-receipt-hog

For more details on how much Receipt Hog coins are worth, use this info as a reference:

  • 1,000 coins = $5
  • 2,900 coins = $15
  • 4,300 coins = $25
  • 6,500 coins = $40

If 1,000 coins equals $5, then 1 coin equals $0.005. However, as the coins increase, the payout seems to be more generous as 1 coin equals almost $0.007 at 6,500 coins.

Earning Potential

As much as it hurts to say this in a Receipt Hog review, the earning potential for this app is extremely low.

In fact, this might be one of the lowest paying receipt apps around when you compare Receipt Hog to reward apps like Drop or Dosh.

To put it into context, let’s break down a few numbers given the information listed above…

Let’s be extremely generous and say you spend $200/week and earn only coin receipts.

This means that you would earn 40 points per week (assuming you spend $100 twice in a given week).

With that in mind, it would take you 25 WEEKS… half of an entire year just to reach the 1,000 coin minimum which equals a whopping… 5 dollars.

Remember, that scenario was with a generous $200/week spending…Depending on your scenario, you could be earning even less than that.

Will the points eventually add up?

Sure, but you have to ask yourself if the effort is worth it in the end.

Granted, Hog Slots and leveling up speeds this up slightly, so if you get lucky, you can earn significantly more per year.

However, if you want guaranteed income, various gig apps are a better way to create new income streams for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

As usual, I think the best way to wrap up this Receipt Hog review is to examine some of the most commonly asked questions about this app”

You have 2 weeks (exactly 14 days) to upload your receipt after shopping. Uploading any time after that will not be a valid entry.

What Receipts Aren’t Allowed?

You cannot submit receipts from anyone but yourself and the people in your household.

One again, receipts must contain store name, items with their price, transaction total, and transaction date.

Are There Receipt Limits?

You can upload up to 3 receipts from the same store and up to 20 receipts within a given week.

Are There Receipt Hog Cheats?

There are no Receipt Hog cheats.

Any attempt to cheat or upload other people’s receipts will result in the closure of your account.

Is Receipt Hog Legit?

Short answer… Yes, Receipt Hog is completely legit.

With over 4.5 stars on any app store and over 200,000 total reviews, it’s hard to say that there are any complaints with this app.

Receipt-Hog-app-Android

Receipt Hog also has a history of paying users with plenty of earning proof out there, so again, it’s legit but a slow earning app.

However, if we take a quick look at the pros and cons of this app, I think you’ll be able to make your own conclusion about if this app is worth the download:

Pros

The main perk of using Receipt Hog is that practically any receipt earns points.

Other pros include:

  • User friendly interface.
  • A straightforward way to earn free money.
  • Easy scanning and payout structure.
  • Fun bonuses like Hog Slots.

Cons

The main drawbacks of Receipt Hog include:

  • Very low earnings – good luck earnings more than $10 to $20 per year unless you get lucky with Hog Slots.
  • Some difficulty with uploading long receipts.

In full honesty, there isn’t anything particularly wrong with this app.

The only real downside is the earning potential, which happens to be the most important factor.

Apps Like Receipt Hog

If you like the idea of scanning your receipts for cash and prizes, some other Receipt Hog alternatives include:

  • Checkout 51 – A leading grocery rewards app where you scan grocery and gas receipts to earn cashback.
  • Caddle – A Canadian receipt scanning app that’s similar to Receipt Hog. Checkout our Caddle review for all the info.
  • GetUpside – This receipt scanning app helps you save money on gas and gas-station purchases, which is pretty awesome! Checkout our GetUpside review for all the details.
  • Fetch Rewards – Again, Fetch Rewards is a leading receipt scanning app with an incredibly low payout threshold and dozens of free gift card options.
  • ReceiptPal – This is probably the most similar app to Receipt Hog, except the difference is you have a limit of receipt uploads per week and have to complete Receipt Cards to earn points. Checkout our ReceiptPal review for more info.

Hopefully, one of these apps like Receipt Hog helps you save more money with your receipts!

Final Thoughts

In summary, do you think Receipt Hog deserves a spot on your home screen?

That’s really up to you.

Are you willing to wait months until you receive your first $5? If you are then Receipt Hog might be a great option.

Here’s what I will say though…

There are plenty of other reward apps or passive income ideas that will serve you better in the long run.

Plus, as you can see from this Reddit thread, unless you’re serious about receipt scanning apps and decide to use multiple apps, don’t expect to make too much:
Beermoney-receipt-hog

Personally, I think side hustles like starting a blog or focusing on ways to save more money each month are more impactful than using Receipt Hog.

But hey, at the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with adding Receipt Hog to your beermoney routine and to earn some free rewards each year.
