Owning a vehicle is one of the largest annual expenses a person can have. In fact, according to AAA, the average vehicle costs around $8,500 per year when you factor in monthly payments, depreciation, repairs, and mileage.
Cars are an inevitable expense for many. Personally, I have a car, and when I was working in-office, it was my daily method of transportation.
However, out of all types of car expenses (insurance, payment, repairs, depreciation) the one that always irks me the most is gas.
I’m sure you can relate. There’s just something depressing about dropping $50+ on a refuel and feeling like you have nothing to show for it.
Anyway, since I love cashback apps, I was pretty excited when I recently stumbled a relatively new cashback for gas app: GetUpside.
If you want to save up to $0.25 per gallon on gas and even earn rewards for restaurant and grocery purchases in the future, be sure to read this GetUpside review until the end!

What Is GetUpside?
GetUpside is a free rewards app for Android and iOS that aims to help people save money at the pump.
The app is basically like Fetch Rewards or other common grocery rebate apps, just for gas. If you frequently drive and want a simple way to save more money each month, this app is worth the download.
How Does Get UpSide Work?
Saving money on gas with GetUpside is fairly simple. In fact, you can get started in 3 steps after you’ve installed the app and created a free account with your email address or Facebook account.
1. Find Local Gas Offers
If you’ve ever used an app like Ibotta or Checkout 51, GetUpside works the exact same way, only for gas purchases.
GetUpside partners with 12,000+ gas stations across the United States. Some popular GetUpside gas stations include:
- BP,
- Shell.
- Exxon.
- Valero.
- Race Trac.
- Philips 66.
- Circle K.
Once you open the app, you’ll see local gas station prices, as well as GetUpside cashback offers.
GetUpside is great for comparing local prices to find cheap gas. However, cashback is the name of the game for this app, and this brings us to step 2.
2. Claim Gas Offers & Refuel
Grocery rebate apps make you claim offers before shopping. GetUpside is the exact same for earning cashback on gas purchases.
Additionally, GetUpside has two types of offers:
- Check-In Offers – Some stations let you claim cashback just by visiting a partner gas station and “checking-in” through the mobile app after refueling. These offers must be claimed within 20 minutes after purchasing.
- Receipt Offers – Most stations require you to upload a receipt to provide proof of purchase. You have 4 hours to make a purchase after claiming an offer, and 24 hours after purchase to upload your receipt.
Regardless of the claim type, you can claim up to 50 gallons per offer.
You also have to pay with a debit or credit card for GetUpside to work.
Once you successfully check-in or upload an eligible receipt, offers take up to 10 days to process.
3. Earn & Redeem Cashback
Once claims process, you earn cashback in your GetUpside wallet.
GetUpside claims it can save up to $0.25 per gallon, but the actual amount you save depends on the offer you claim. But hey, free money is free money!
Currently, GetUpside has the following reward options:
- PayPal Cash – A $1 fee applies for amounts under $15. If you refer a friend to GetUpside, this fee is waived as long as they are active.
- Free Gift Cards – Requires a minimum of $10. You must redeem round amounts, so no spare change. All gift card codes are sent electronically, just like rewards from Honey for example.
- Check – There is a $1 fee for cashing out under $50.
In terms of gift cards, GetUpside has a fairly healthy selection. There’s pretty much any major retailer you’d want, and $10 isn’t horrible for a cash out limit.
Plus, easy access to PayPal is a nice perk for this rewards app. You generally receive rewards within 24 to 48 hours following redemption.

Other Ways To Earn Cashback
One of the main reasons I decide to write a GetUpside review was because of the range of features this app continues to add.
GetUpside is great for saving money on gas. However, there’s clearly other plans for this platform moving forwards.
1. Save On Other Gas Station Services
GetUpside doesn’t just have local gas offers. In fact, other services like cash washes are sometimes available.
Additionally, convenience store offers are also common.
In this example, you can see that GetUpside also lets you add additional offers like a wash or 20% cashback for convenience store purchases for up to $3. That’s a pretty hefty amount of cashback!
Plus, in this offer, you also get $0.15 per gallon in cash back, so you have a variety of ways to earn cash back.
2. GetUpside Grocery Stores
Recently, GetUpside has rolled out grocery store offers to let you earn even more cashback.
Currently, these offers are only available in:
- Washington DC.
- Virginia.
- Maryland.
GetUpside has two featured stores as well: Streets Market & Cafe and Moti’s Market.
I assume these are local chains since I haven’t heard of them, but regardless, this new feature bodes well for the future of the GetUpside app as way to save money.
3. Restaurant Offers
Alongside grocery stores, GetUpside is also testing restaurant offers to help earn more cashback.
These offers are still only available in 3 states, but you can earn up to 35% cashback, which sounds pretty unreal on paper.
For both grocery and restaurant offers, time will tell if GetUpside can truly become one of the most versatile reward apps around.
GetUpside vs GasBuddy – Which App Is Better?
GasBuddy is probably the most popular app there is for finding cheap gas. In terms of coverage and gas savings, it’s pretty much the most commonly recommended app there is.
Both apps are pretty similar. You can save up to $0.25 per gallon, compare local prices, and use each app across the United States.
However, there’s one main difference between GasBuddy and GetUpside you need to know: GasBuddy works directly with your checking account, which means you have to purchase fuel with your debit card.
See, with GasBuddy, you actually get a membership card that’s linked to your checking account in the mail. After you swipe your membership card and pay, your checking account is charged, factoring in your GasBuddy savings.
This is great if you don’t have a credit card or if GetUpside isn’t in your area.
However, if you have a gas rewards card or cashback credit card, this is a huge missed opportunity.
GasBuddy still lets you earn cashback for shopping at certain partners, but the savings are applied the next time at the pump, not PayPal cash or free gift cards.
Ultimately, if you have GetUpside in your area, I think it’s a better app. However, GasBuddy definitely has wider coverage, and the app is solid if you don’t use your credit card.
Other GetUpside Reviews
GetUpside has nearly a 5 star rating and more than 100,000 reviews between the Android and IOS store, which is frankly insane.
Additionally, most GetUpside app reviews seem to be pretty popular:
As you can see from this testimonial, the GetUpside app saved this user $50 in 2 months.
It’s a good idea to be skeptical of online reviews in general. After all, since you can make money by writing reviews, reviews aren’t always driven by honesty.
However, pretty much any Reddit thread you find on GetUpside also sings it’s praises, and I trust Reddit more:
This Reddit user states GetUpside lets them earn $10 per week since they drive a lot.
This works out to $520 per year in savings, just from saving money at the pump!
Ultimately, I think the positive feedback and potential to save money on gas means this app warrants a try, provided it works in your area.
Pros & Cons
If you’re still wondering if GetUpside is worth using to save on gas or not, consider the following pros and cons for this app:
The Pros
Keeping more of your hard-earned money is important, especially for unavoidable expenses like refuelling you car.
Some of the main advantages of using GetUpside include:
- Earn real cash savings
- Variety of free gift car rewards
- Claim up to 50 gallons per offer
- Multiple ways to claim offers
- Meaningful savings on fuel
- Variety of gas station partners
The Cons
Saving money on fuel is nice, but the GetUpside app also has some limitations worth noting:
- Rewards don’t always stack with your credit card
- Not available at every gas station and some states don’t really have coverage
- Cash out fees for PayPal cash and checks
Ultimately, if you do a lot of driving, I think the GetUpside app makes sense.
But, don’t be afraid to experiment with other reward programs, like Drop, or other receipt scanning apps like Receipt Hog and CoinOut.
The Best Apps Like GetUpside
If you like the idea of earning cash back on gas purchases, you’re in luck: there are numerous GetUpside alternatives you can also experiment with to earn more rewards.
As mentioned, GasBuddy is really the closest competitor to GetUpside.
But, some other reward apps you can try include:
- Trunow
- Receipt Hog
- CoinOut
- ReceiptPal
- Ibotta (for convenience store purchases)
- Checkout 51
- Murphy Drive Rewards
- Shell US’s mobile app
- Dosh (automatically earn cash back at hundreds of merchants)
- Exxon Mobil Speedpass
Checkout 51 and Trunow have some of the higher-paying gas offers, but it’s worth experimenting with several GetUpside alternatives to see how much you save.

Is GetUpside Legit?
According to GetUpside’s website, the platform has paid out $100,000,000 to users in cash back since its inception.
The bottom line is that GetUpside is legit and pays users.
There are plenty of positive app reviews online, proof that users cash out, and the app is pretty highly rated overall.
My advice is to give the app a try if you do a lot of driving to see how much you save the next few weeks of buying fuel.
At the very worst, GetUpside won’t have many gas stations in your area and you can delete the app.
But, at its best, GetUpside can find meaningful savings at the pump, helping to save more money each year.

Who Should Use GetUpside?
As mentioned, if you do a lot of driving, I think you should try GetUpside.
The app now has restaurant offers as well and more ways to earn, but at its core, this is a cash back app for gas.
What makes GetUpside unique is the high savings rate of $0.25 per gallon and how much gas you can claim per month.
Reward variety is also great, so there’s really no downside to trying GetUpside to see how much you save.

Frequently Asked Questions
Since this is a newer app, I thought this GetUpside review could use a few answers to some of the most common (and important) questions about this app.
1. Can You Stack Rewards?
According to GetUpside, you can use their app to earn rewards alongside other methods like a gas rewards credit card or various coupons.
However, GetUpside also states that: “if you use a rewards card or other promotions, your GetUpside cash back per gallon will be reduced to account for the cost of the other promotion.”
This is done to prevent you from stacking so many rewards that the gas station ends up losing money. It’s still worth stacking, but keep this condition in mind.
2. What Devices Are Supported?
GetUpside supports iPhone running iOS: v10.0 and newer and Android phones running Android 4.1 and newer.
3. Is GetUpside Safe?
According to GetUpside, they: “never get access to your full credit or debit card number – just the last 4 digits. We take your security very seriously, and never request or view your full credit/debit card information.”
4. What Are GetUpside Promo Codes?
Another easy way to stretch your GetUpside savings a bit further is to also use a GetUpside promo code when signing up.
These offers change all the time, but if you do a quickly Google Search, you’ll find plenty of fresh codes that give you a certain bonus on your savings per gallon.
Some recent GetUpside promo codes include:
- TDU4W.
- FFTCX.
- WQ8JR.
- EVAN2293.
- WFM8U.
Again, these promos change all the time, but it’s a nice way to save more money on your next gas purchase.

Final Thoughts
No one on this earth enjoys filling up their car. However, spending money on gas in an unfortunate reality unless you own a purely electric vehicle.
Thankfully, apps like GetUpside make it easier to save money on gas and to also find cheap gas prices in your neighborhood without much effort.
If you use an app like GetUpside with other frugal habits, like carpooling or using a rewards credit card to always earn cashback, you can probably put a decent dent in your annual fuel costs.
It’s worth keeping an eye on this app to see what developments are coming. But, for now, I hope GetUpside is in your area and that you enjoy this gas app!
